I’ll be honest with you
I totally know how overwhelming parenting in the 21st Century can be.
When I started out as a brand-new parent 14 years ago I had no idea what lay ahead of us!
I remember my eldest running around in nappies while I was on a Skype call with Graeme (one of those futurists in our team that I keep talking about, and the co-founder of the Future Smart Parent Club, and co-author of Future Proof your Child for the 2020s and beyond) and listening to him tell me how he was giving his middle daughter an allowance to outsource some of her homework.
That random conversation was a BIG moment in my parenting journey that hit me like a tonne of bricks. It dawned on me that much of my approach to parenting was shaped by my own upbringing, yet the world I grew up in was vastly different from the one my children are being raised in.
Fast-forward a few years to the beginning of 2020. I had just been diagnosed with cancer (I've since kicked its ass), and at the same time the world went into lockdown. Talk about disruption!
We decided to take our kids out of school to just let them play while we focused on my physical and their mental health - rather than trying to teach them their times tables and how to read amidst the disruption the world, and our family, was experiencing. (My son did learn to read by playing Minecraft by thee way.)
Despite the fear I felt during that period, I was also lucky enough to have a different view of the world from having worked with our team of futurists at TomorrowToday Global for over decade, and being a part of the work we did with helping our global clients prepare their people and organisations for the disruption that we were all experiencing (and continue to experience) in this new world of work.
So in the midst of the 2020 craziness I finally realized:
How truly blessed I am to have daily access to the insights, research, practical advice and different ways of thinking that our team at TomorrowToday share.
I recognized that the valuable insights we've been providing to our global clients for over two decades already, for which they pay thousands of dollars, are just as essential for parents and the future leaders and world changers that we're parenting today.
Without a doubt, we have to parent a little differently, yet very much intentionally, for our changing world. We have to be brave, be willing to experiment, to make changes, adapt when necessary and innovate our own ways of thinking in order to help our children flourish in their own exciting futures.
Having been given the chance to 'look into the future' through the work that our team of futurists do, has allowed our family to make a variety of decisions that we would never have been brave enough to follow through with had we not been exposed to this thinking and insights.
I mean, we embrace tech (my boy learnt to read playing Minecraft), yet my 13-year-old isn't allowed on Social Media yet. We unschooled our kids for 3 years, but during that time they were also a part of a global learning hub - engaging with kids from around the world while being able to dive into their own passion projects, while learning essential skills along the way. (Now they're at a small local school where they can climb trees, build forts and crochet during class, and are at no disadvantage to their peers from being out of school for that time.)
We celebrate their achievements but also encourage them to fail. Whether they go to university one day isn't a priority right now, but raising life-long learners certainly is. ... (which means my 11-year-old has spent most of today on YouTube discovering where the best fishing spots are, and what the best bait and fishing tackle to use on our local river is, and no doubt tomorrow he'll be digging in the mud for prawns and hopefully hooking 'the big one'.)
And as much as we get right, we also get wrong... But hopefully, our kids are watching us make these mistakes and learning that it's ok to do so, observing that innovation doesn't come from doing the same old thing and problem-solving isn't something we just talk about. That we all grow and learn every single day that we are brave enough to do so.
The future smart parent club is for these parents:

JUDE FOULSTON MOM, ENTREPRENEUR, CANCER SURVIVOR & TEA DRINKER.
I’m Jude Foulston, an introverted mom trying my best to raise kids who are happy & confident, kids who embrace all that makes them unique, while preparing them for an exciting future that looks really, nothing like the world we grew up in.
My kids are 11 and 13, and in 2020, during a global pandemic, after being diagnosed with breast cancer and dealing with chemo and some big life questions, our family took the decision to remove our kids from their traditional mainstream schools which hadn’t really been working for us, and took a completely different route of self-directed learning. (Our kids are now at a more 'mainstream' school, but they still manage to climb trees, go barefoot, and where their homework is mostly reading and playing.)
I know that it takes a village to raise a child, and I am always looking for fellow villagers. Whether you send your kids to mainstream schools, whether you homeschool, or unschool, I look forward to being able to walk this parenting journey with you.
