10 Tips for parents showing their children how to use ChatGPT.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is quickly transforming the way we live and work, and the world that our children are growing up in.
Future Smart parent Co-Founder and global futurist Graeme Codrington reminds us that 'AI will not replace humans, but humans who use AI will replace humans who don’t.'
Below are 10 tips for parents to get started when exploring ChatGPT with your children.
-
Set clear boundaries: Establish rules and guidelines for using ChatGPT, including appropriate topics, time limits, and supervision. Ensure children understand the importance of responsible and respectful engagement. Just like other spaces online, you can lose yourself down the rabbit hole of ChatGPT and, before you know it, hours have gone by!
-
Emphasize critical thinking: Encourage children to think critically about the responses they receive from ChatGPT. Remind them that ChatGPT is an AI model and may not always provide accurate or reliable information. Teaching our kids to question what they read and see online (and in conversations) is such a important skill to teach them.
-
Prioritize safety: Remind children not to share personal information, such as their full name, address, or contact details, when interacting with ChatGPT or any online platform. A great prompt to use on ChatGPT when starting new chats is to start off with: 'Henceforth, provide only replies suitable for minors/kids'
-
Foster curiosity and learning: Encourage children to ask open-ended questions and explore a variety of topics with ChatGPT. Emphasize that ChatGPT can be a tool for learning and discovery. Remind yourselves that the more you 'chat' with the tool the better your answers will be... Don't treat it as a search engine - rather try to have a conversation with it.
-
Encourage creativity: Prompt children to use ChatGPT for creative endeavors, such as generating story ideas, brainstorming, or engaging in imaginative conversations. Encourage them to think outside the box.
-
Supervise and engage: Stay actively involved in your child's interactions with ChatGPT. Monitor the conversations, provide guidance, and discuss the responses together to enhance learning and address any concerns. ChatGPT doesn't always get the answers right - sometimes you need to change the way you ask things, sometimes you need to be more specific. Help your kids learn to structure their prompts and chats by practising and experimenting with the tools.
-
Reinforce ethical use: Teach children about the ethical considerations of AI technology, including the importance of respecting privacy, avoiding biases, and using AI responsibly and ethically. Make sure your children know that ChatGPT can't do their school work for them and that copying from ChatGPT is still plagiarism. ChatGPT is a tool to enhance and deepen learning, not to replace learning.
-
Encourage critical evaluation: Teach children to evaluate the information they receive from ChatGPT by cross-referencing with trusted sources and verifying facts. Help them understand the difference between reliable and unreliable information.
-
Model respectful behavior: Demonstrate respectful and polite interactions with ChatGPT, which children can emulate. Encourage them to use ChatGPT as a tool for positive and constructive conversations. Yes - there's no harm is saying please and thanks to AI...
-
Be a learning partner: Engage in discussions with your child about their ChatGPT interactions. Ask them about their experiences, what they've learned, and any challenges they've encountered. Provide support, guidance, and additional resources when needed.
